Introduction

Face the colour is my creation. All you will read and see on this blog is written or created by me. ... Who I am? My real name is Laura Nuesken. I am 31 years old, married, have two kids and speak German and English fluently. I was born and raised in Germany, but have been living in Canada for the past 5 years.
I am a face, body and pre-natal belly painter and balloon twister, as well as a clown and glitter tattoo artist.
I love my job. In my opinion it is the best job in the world after being a mom. I can be creative and bring smiles to other people's faces and it never feels like work to me, though, believe me, there have been some 12 hour days working this job.
My job is not one where I start work at a certain time and stop 8 hours later. It is one, where while standing in the shower or trying to fall asleep at night, all of a sudden I get a really great idea for a new balloon creation or face painting design and have to get pencil and paper to sketch it out so I won't forget it. It is one where my neighbours aren't surprised to see a clown walking up and down the streets and none of my guests are surprised to find balloons all over my house even though there is no party going on. In other words, I live and breathe this job. Even now, as I am writing this, my mind strays to designs that I like to try for Halloween. Well, you get the idea.
I first got involved in the face and body art industry about two years ago, in November 2010, just after Halloween. Following a frustrating experience with melting and smearing Hallooween make-up, I went looking for a better product. Being born and raised in Germany, where we have Karneval once a year with lots of costumes and parades, I remembered my mother having had a really nice product to paint our faces. I soon found a supplier close to me and got some quality face paints. (I will write more about products another time) Once I unpacked them at home, the interest in my family went up and I painted my first face. I had no real idea of what to do, so I searched for images on the internet. As my kids and I were looking through them, they wanted me to paint something they saw, so the first face I painted was a copy of a design that we found online. From then on, I was hooked. I spend countles hours practicing various kinds of brushstrokes on my arms and legs, looking at other painter's work and reading every piece of information I could find. Eventually, I started coming up with my own designs as well.
Since then I have attended workshops and continuously worked on improving my work.

Below you can see a design I painted whithin the first two weeks of painting compared to one that I painted recently.

In spring 2012, I was asked to make balloon animals for a Birthday party, and that is how that part started. I have come a good way since I started and am constantly working on getting better and learning new techniques.
Here is a comparison of a balloon giraffe. The first one I made and the one I frequently make for customers at events now.

I added this blog to my website with the goal to keep you updated on current matters, be it upcoming events, information on products and my service, or just to share my experiences.
Please keep in mind that what I write is my personal point of view and might not be the view of everyone else who is working in this industry.

Have a colourful day!
